Engine Design

Compact power unit

The new engine is a wet-sump In-line Four. Like the Ninja ZX-10R, the forward slanted cylinders are cast integral with the crankcases, and a compact tri-axis shaft arrangement is used. The result is a highly compact power unit that is no wider than the Ninja ZX-12R’s, in spite of the increased displacement.

Like the 10R, the ZZR runs forged camshafts, forged pistons and carburised connecting rods for high reliability and high durability. Specially designed coolant passageways are used to efficiently disperse heat from the big-bore engine.

Crankshaft flywheel inertia was designed to ensure a satisfying spread of power and awesome acceleration across the rpm range.
